A Mother's Love - Robin

Robert of Locksley, future earl of Huntingdon. My firstborn. My Robin.

Fate has decreed he be my only child as well. I have traded my life for his. Not by choice, and not without regret.

Downy brown hair, solemn blue eyes. As if he already senses his pending loss. A more beautiful child I have never seen. Of course, I'm his mother and bound to think so.

I can no longer fight the darkness. I kiss my baby and release him to his father. I close my eyes, a tear and my breath slipping from me at the same time.

Everything is a Choice

Young love, happy laughter, carefree days.

Clasped hands, frantic kisses, heated embraces.

Plans for the future.

A call. The heed.

Love versus loyalty.

Honor and glory versus love and marriage.

Angry eyes, hurt eyes, tear-filled eyes.

One last kiss. One last hug. One last word.

Goodbye.

The long voyage.

Scorching days, freezing nights.

Thirst, hunger, exhaustion.

Honor but no glory.

Wound, pain, blood, fever, dreams.

Home!

England. Locksley. Marian.

The return.

Terror. Injustice. Corruption.

Taxes. Starvation. Despair.

Fool. Sacrifice. Honorable.

Outlawed.

Rob from the rich, give to the poor.

Different directions.

A choice.

No choice.

Everything is a choice.

He Does

They don’t think he deserves my loyalty.

But he does.

They don’t think he deserves my friendship, either.

But he does.

They don’t understand my true complaint about being hungry or tired or hot.

But he does.

They don’t truly understand when I cry for seemingly no reason or startle awake, my heart pounding and body trembling, and unable to close my eyes again.

But he does.

They don’t understand the bond between master and servant, brothers in arms, friends, brothers.

They don’t know that I’ve done my share of lashing out and being hateful and hurtful.

But he does.

The Gift of Life

The feeling of the small life in his hands filled Robin with awe.

The infant gazed at him with implicit trust. Utmost faith that Robin was there only for his good and not for ill.

Had this baby gazed upon the last person to hold him with like trust? Well, look where that had gotten him.

That someone could throw away something so precious was despicable.

Marian's derisive, “Is it yours?” had cut him to the quick. He would not be so careless, and yet a part of him longed to lay claim to the new precious life.

“He Spoke Your Name...”

Tossing and turning, shivering, sweating, dreaming...

A young girl with sparkling blue eyes, glossy brown curls, creamy skin.

A maiden with shining eyes, shy smiles, and dimples.

Endless summer afternoons, cool fall days, warm winter evenings.

Walking, riding, laughing.

Flowers, ribbons.

Arms, lips, curves. Embraces, kisses, realizations.

No longer a girl, but a woman.

Want. Desire. Lust. Love.

A question. An answer. A promise.

A king. A quest. A journey.

Honor. Glory.

A plea. Promises broken.

Anger, sadness, sharp words, tears.

Regrets. Hurt. Good bye.

Hunger. Thirst. Heat. Cold.

Pain. Wound. Longing. Home. Ache. Alone.

A whisper. “Marian...”

Acknowledgment

The look on his face said it all.

I overstepped my bounds again.

He'd done nothing to deserve my wrath or my harsh words and, yet, I could not help myself.

His very presence was a trial, but only because he was a much better man than I. His very goodness only serves to highlight the darkness that resides within me.

I cannot live without him and, yet, some days, I fear cannot live with him.

His love and his loyalty cling to me and they shame me even as his words will not.

I do not deserve him.

Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] rh_intercomm; from the prompt "dancing"

Robin had always been bored to tears by the dancing lessons his father insisted he take, despite the fact that he was quite good at it. There were much better ways to spend his time-- both time taken up by his instructor, and time spent with local lasses. But, he wasn't given a choice, so he reluctantly learned.

Now, as Marian twirled and clapped across from him, her eyes shining and her smile wide when he repeated the moves, he found himself suddenly very appreciative of those hours spent practicing at the manor.

Perhaps, his father had not been wrong, after all.

Robin turned the twisted metal over in his hand. He had been unsettled enough when they reached the Crusader camp, only to find it gone. Not deserted; gone, as if had never been there. It should have been reassuring to find proof that they were not in the wrong place, but this was worse. It indicated that something had, indeed, happened.

"Are you sure we should've gone east?" Much called. "Maybe it was south-- what's that?" He came over and examined the ravaged buckle, then met Robin's troubled gaze. "Where are they?" he whispered.

"I have no idea," Robin murmured.
