Plus, you have to take into account the familiarity between them. I mean, no matter how mad at him she is, there's just this air between the two of them that says "these two trust each other and know each other VERY well".
(And I definitely don't think they said "I love you" before he left. Marian's pretty pleased by the time he actually DOES say it on the show, which, I mean, it's implied at the end of the first season, but he actually EXPLICITLY says it in season two, and she's like "TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH!", and then he makes a joke about it, so yeah. It's just not something that's easy for either of them to say. But it also doesn't NEED to be said, not with these two.)
