This is absolutely delightful. I agree with you that Marian probably would have waited, but she's still so in character here that I'm starting to doubt that! I think you chose a really good moment to start from, which makes it seem believable. And I love the little details like how Robin saw Matilda's cottage as a kid. So sweet and sensual, and I love how bold Marian is!

(I rarely find R/M actually hot together, so good job!)

Whew--much better than mine. And I have to say, I *don't* think Marian would wait if the right circumstance presented itself. She is quite impetuous. She might not out-right plan it, such as you have presented here, but if she were caught up in the moment, then I don't think she'd hesitate. (Much).

She is impetuous about some things, but she's also aware of "the long game," which is why I think she'd wait-- to make sure she didn't close off any potential avenues of action. That's where I get my opinion, anyway; but I could see what you're saying. :) At any rate, I'd hate to think they never had a chance together. ;)

Why didn't I comment on this story earlier? Many apologies. I meant to come back, but RL has been a bit awful lately. Anyway, I loved how they got into their little tryst in this story. Handy cottage and all that. Both of them are being just their natural selves the whole time. But what is with Robin's socks? *snort*

Well, after our awesome conversation over at ff.net the past couple of days, I definitely HAD to come join this comm. And then I found this fic, and I'm so glad I did!

This was extremely well-written, AND HOT, and you made the whole situation highly ... believable. I tend to think, like you, that Marian would likely be one to wait for the ring, but there are certain cases where I think exceptions can be made, and this fic is a brilliant example of that.

I actually have that convo open in another tab and half-replied to. :D Good to have you aboard!! :) You'll have to tell us if the comm colors make you crave chocolate mints, since that seems to be a common consensus, lol.

SAME HERE. Although I've had some conversations that make me wonder if stuff like this wasn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. In fact, this fic was inspired when I was chatting with a friend who said something HAD to have happened prior to 2x11, based on that kiss. And I was like, You know what? YES. ;)

That is a good point ... I mean, the 2x11 kiss is so completely ... WOW. (All their kisses are good, don't get me wrong. But that one was like, BRAND NEW KINDA WOW.)

And really, from what I understand (which is not to say from deep research, so I could be mistaken), a betrothal was usually enough back then for it to be socially acceptable for a couple to get it on. ;) If I weren't so convinced that they hadn't, I'd think they'd have done so before he went on Crusade.

Yeah, part of me definitely likes to entertain the thought that they might've before he left ... or that at least an attempt was made ... but I don't know if I can ever go so far to say that they actually DID. But I'm not opposed to someone making a case for it in fanfic. :D

And yeah, to say it OMG DEFINITELY CANONICALLY HAPPENED is a bit much. But I definitely think they were VERY close -- in many ways -- to each other before he left. And that's the reason she's so rankled by him when he comes back. Because she trusted him, and he hurt her by going away.

I just don't think things like Much's comment to Marian, about how in the Holy Lands, Robin had dreams and spoke her name work if there isn't a very serious past connection between the two of them. They were more than just "betrothed to be married", and I'll never be convinced otherwise. :)

Absolutely. And how Marian wavers back and forth between keeping Robin at arm's length, and helping him and letting him get to her-- I don't think she would have had so much difficulty deciding how to be with him if the relationship hadn't been a very close one.

That scene with Much's comment has got to be one of my favorite moments from the show. Marian's and Edward's reactions just make that, when normally I think Sam tends to shine in scenes where Much has a lot of lines. But their faces, omg lol... :D

Yes, you can so completely tell that, given different circumstances, there's a HUGE part of her that just wants, more than anything, to welcome him back and start over again. But she won't do that because she was deeply affected by his leaving, and because she's too stubborn and proud to admit that she probably needs him just as much as he needs her. But her actions and attitude toward him at the beginning of the series point to something much more than just a casual betrothal between them before.

And yes, I love that scene soooo much. I love Marian's expression, she's kinda like "Oh,awwwwwkward". LOL And Edward. He's just like "Ummm."

I actually get the impression that they never even said that they loved each other before he left-- more like it was probably one of those implicitly-understood things between them, but I think they've both always had difficulty saying things like that. Stubborn pride, absolutely.

Plus, you have to take into account the familiarity between them. I mean, no matter how mad at him she is, there's just this air between the two of them that says "these two trust each other and know each other VERY well".

(And I definitely don't think they said "I love you" before he left. Marian's pretty pleased by the time he actually DOES say it on the show, which, I mean, it's implied at the end of the first season, but he actually EXPLICITLY says it in season two, and she's like "TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH!", and then he makes a joke about it, so yeah. It's just not something that's easy for either of them to say. But it also doesn't NEED to be said, not with these two.)

Right. Though, much as I think it was understood, I think things would've gone better if they'd said it sooner. Like, it doesn't have to be said... yet, they both still needed to hear it.

Oh, absolutely. I think it would've been MUCH better, for so many reasons, if they'd both just said it. None of this "Oh, she/he already knows" garbage. SAY IT YOU IDIOTS. LOL

But like, I get soooo frustrated on the last episode of season one, when the whole "You're not really going to marry him?" convo is happening, because OMG. I just wanted to take their heads and SMACK THEM TOGETHER.

And I always kind of want to give Djaq a little smack, much as I love her, about the whole "I love you, you love me" thing. What if Marian HAD died then?!?

Ohhhhh yeah, that little issue! I like Djaq, but I was none too pleased with her then. I was like, "UM. GIRL IS DYING. STFU."

(I will say that Robin's whole "We should be together" speech is pretty much my favorite thing EVER. There is so much conviction in his voice when he says that ... it makes me tear up every single time.)

HAHAHA yes. :D I was trying to make a super-sad icon for another rp where I'm S3-era Robin, and grabbed one crying screencap that I ended up not even being able to use, it just was so painful. The one I wound up with is almost as bad, and I tend to use it when guilting people. ;) (It's VERY effective, lolz)

I have no doubt of that! I'm pretty much convinced he could get whatever he wanted just by making that face. LOL

HA! Have you seen S3? He makes a face in 3x11 that I'm CONVINCED must have gotten him out of trouble on many, many occasions, lol... (moments before this icon, actually)

I haven't actuallIy gotten through all of S3 yet, no. It's PAINFUL for me. (I am also in a slight bit of denial, too. LOL) But I've no doubt that his face has gotten him out of trouble a LOT. ;)

It is pretty painful, yeah, especially on the heels of the incredibleness of S1 and the awesomeness of S2 (sans the ending. Which never happened).

I'm in some pretty heavy denial about the season 2 ending. I mean, I think the episode was very pretty -- up until the end. The end is just ... eesh. Way to COMPLETELY bastardize the legend, guys. Sooo not amused.

Oh, definitely. And that's why, in my head, the end of season two didn't happen. They totally got married and went on to have a few pretty babies and LA LA LA THAT'S THE WAY IT ENDS FOR ME.

I love this. To be honest, I don't think it would be so out of character for Marian to do something like this, at least by the time "Walkabout" came around. Although it's just too heartbreaking to think they never got the chance before she died, so perhaps that's wishful thinking ;)

This felt very believable, and lovely to see Marian as the seducer. There just isn't enough fic with Robs/Maz happy sexy!times.
