What Would Robin Do...?

Okay, this came to me as I was ploughing up and down the fast lane in the local swimming pool.

PROMPT: 1x03 - Will presents Robin with _______ that he's carved for the gang, not tags.

Will presents Robin with an unidentifiable object that he's carved for the gang, not tags.


"What's this?" Robin asks, dangling the strange object in front of him.

"Soap on a rope."

"What?" Robin asks, taking a sniff and quickly recoiling.

"Soap on a rope," Will repeats. He looks pointedly at Djaq. "Blame her; it was her idea."

"What can I say," Djaq shrugs. "You all smell."

"Look, not being funny," Allan says, "but you could have made something useful."

"What, like an identifying tag or something?" Will says.

Allan rolls his eyes.

"Now you're just being stupid."

Yes, I'm pretty certain Djaq had a hand in it, though what it was made from is anybody's guess. I doubt they even had soap in those days. Perhaps one of you historical folks out there can enlighten me?

Oh, they had soap, although not in the modern sense. They could make weak detergents from a combination of animal fat (usually mutton fat or tallow), wood ash, lye and natural soda.

Incidentally, Djaq might have needed some of those ingredients to make black powder, so maybe she stumbled on the soap by accident. ;)

That would have been far more useful! Not just for bathing, but also for lubricating tight spaces in order to squeeze through, booby-trapping flagstone floors...the possibilities are endless.

Loved this! I hope the soap was lavender-scented.
